The Abdali branch of the Al-Sallami tribe, which can trace its ancestry to the Kalad tribe, one of the ten Yaffa tribes, ruled this region from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Up until 1967, when the sultan was driven out and the city joined the People's Republic of South Yemen, Lahij served as the capital of the Sultanate of Lahej, a protectorate of the British Empire.
