The town of Kentau is located in Kazakhstan's Turkistan Region. It is situated 30 kilometres to the northeast of Turkestan City at the foot of the Karatau Mountains. In August of 1955, Kentau was founded. In Soviet times, the population of the city was mainly from Russia, the descendants of the repressed: Greeks, Russians, Germans, Koreans, Jews, Chechens, etc., as well as Uzbeks, and majority of population comprising an ethnic Kazakhs. Excavator and transformer factories help large mining ore activities. A large population exodus occurred in the late 1980s or early 1990s, when mines and industrial facilities closed. There are currently about 80,000 people living there, predominantly Kazakhs. Number of people: 57,121; 55,521.
