Ternate is both an island in the Maluku Islands and a city in the North Maluku province of Indonesia. Before Sofifi on the neighbouring coast of Halmahera became the capital in 2010, it served as the de facto provincial capital of North Maluku. It is made up of eight islands that are located off the west coast of Halmahera: Ternate, which is the largest and main island of the city, as well as Moti, Hiri, Tifure, Mayau, Makka, Mano, and Gurida. With a total land area of 162.17 square kilometres and a population density of 1,264 persons per square kilometre, the city has a total population of 185,705 in 2010 and 205,001 in 2020. It serves as a hub for surrounding regions and is the largest and densestly populated city in the province. It is also the economic, cultural, and educational hub of North Maluku. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it served as the capital of the Sultanate of Ternate, which fought the Sultanate of Tidore for dominance of the Moluccas' spice trade before becoming a major target for rival European powers.
