The second-largest city in the Mexican state of Michoacán is called Uruapan. It is located at the western edge of the Purépecha highlands, just to the east of the Tierra Caliente region. Due to its position, it has been a significant city economically since the colonial era. The last Purépecha ruler escaped to this location in 1522, when the Spanish arrived and took control of the city. Friar Juan de San Miguel set designed the current city's layout in 1534. It was the capital of Michoacán during the French Intervention and played a significant part in the War of Independence. Today it is the center of Mexico's avocado growing region, with most of the crop distributed from here nationally and internationally.
