Makiivka, Makiyivka or Makeyevka, formerly Dmytriivsk, Dmytriyevskyi, is an industrial city in eastern Ukraine within the Donetsk Oblast (province). The two cities are basically one conurbation and are separated from the capital Donetsk by a distance of 15 km (9.3 mi). Heavy industrial and coking plants support the regional steel and coal industries at Makiivka, a significant metallurgical and coal-mining hub of the Donets Basin. Despite being officially acknowledged as being a part of Ukraine, the city has been de facto governed by the Donetsk People's Republic since it was taken by forces loyal to Russia in 2014. It has 340,337 people living in it.
