The provincial capital of Amasya in northern Turkey's Black Sea region is the city of Amasya. In the past, it was known as Amaseia or Amasia. Amasya, which is distinct from the rest of Anatolia in a little valley along the banks of the Yeşilrmak River, is located in the mountains above the Black Sea coast. Despite being close to the Black Sea, this region is high above the shore and has an inland climate that is ideal for growing apples, for which Turkey's Amasya province, in north-central Anatolia, is well known. Strabo, a geographer, called it home, and Amirdovlat Amasiatsi, a philosopher and physician who lived in the 15th century, was born there. It has a history of 7,500 years and is situated in a little cleft of the Yeşilrmak (Iris) river. Many of its vestiges may still be seen today.
