West Uzbekistan's Urgench is a district-level city. It serves as the region's capital. In 2021, Urgench was expected to have a population of 145,000, up from 139,100 in 1999. It is situated alongside the Shavat Canal and Amu Darya River. The Kyzylkum Desert separates the city from Bukhara by 450 kilometres (280 miles). The second half of the 19th century marks the beginning of the city's history. The town should not be mistaken with the Turkmenistan city Konye-Urgench of the same name. After the Amu Darya river altered its course in the sixteenth century, leaving the old town high and dry and devoid of water, the city of Old Urgench was left. In the latter half of the 19th century, Russians built New Urgench on the site of a small Khiva Khanate trading post.
