San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec, or simply referred to as Tuxtepec, is the head of the municipality by the same name and is the second most populous city of the Mexican state of Oaxaca. It belongs to the Papaloapan Region's Tuxtepec District. 103,609 people called the city home as of the 2020 census, and 159,452 people called the municipality home. However, census statistics are sometimes underreported for a variety of reasons. The municipality, which is 36 feet above sea level and has around 580 square miles (1,500 km2), is found in the La Cuenca region. The city itself is surrounded by the Papaloapan River, and lies a few kilometers south of the Cerro de Oro Dam on its tributary the Santo Domingo River. The state of Veracruz, Loma Bonita, and San José Chiltepec all abut the municipality's northern, eastern, and southern borders. The state seat of Oaxaca City is 130 miles away, the port of Veracruz is around 100 miles away (160 km), and Mexico City is about 500 miles (310 km).
