130 kilometres northeast of Bogotá, in the area known as the Altiplano Cundiboyacense, in the Eastern Ranges of the Colombian Andes, is the city of Tunja. Its inhabitants in 2018 numbered 172,548. Prior to the Spanish conquest of the Muisca, there was an indigenous community called Hunza that served as the seat of the hoa Eucaneme. On August 20, 1537, the Spanish conquistadors invaded Hunza. Captain Gonzalo Suárez Rendón established the Spanish settlement on August 6, 1539, precisely a year after the founding of the country's capital, Santafé de Bogotá. The Hunzaha Well, Goranchacha Temple, and Cojines del Zaque are among the city's remaining examples of Muisca architecture.
