The town of Tlacotalpan, located in the Tlacotalpan Municipality in the Mexican state of Veracruz, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 principally for its colonial-era architecture and planning. On what was once an island in the Papaloapan River, the settlement was founded in 1550. It was a significant port from the colonial period until the 20th century and one of the few interior river ports in Latin America. However, Tlacotalpan's significance diminished as a result of the railroad's development. The town's Spanish/Caribbean architecture and layout have been preserved throughout the latter 20th century, leading to World Heritage designation. Fishing and tourism, particularly to the yearly feast in honour of Our Lady of Candlemas, are currently the area's main sources of income.
