It is 145 kilometres north of the province capital, Pontianak, and is encircled by the Pasi, Poteng, and Sakok mountains. The word "Singkawang" comes from the Salako language, which describes a sizable area covered in wetlands. The city covers an area of 504 km2 and had a population of 186,462 at the 2010 Census, 207,144 at the 2015 Intermediate Census and 235,064 at the 2020 Census.
