The most populous city in the Philippines is Quezon City, sometimes referred to as the City of Quezon and Q.C. Its population is 2,960,048 people, as of the 2020 census. On October 12, 1939, it was established and given the Manuel L. Quezon name in honour of the country's second president. The city was supposed to take the place of Manila as the national capital of the Philippines because the latter was experiencing traffic congestion, housing shortages, overcrowding, and poor sanitation. In addition to the eight enormous estates the Philippine government purchased for this purpose, many barrios from the towns of Caloocan, Marikina, San Juan, and Pasig were also carved away to establish Quezon City. On October 12, 1949, it was formally designated as the nation's capital, and on that day a number of government agencies and organisations relocated from Manila to the new capital city. As a result, the city had to grow northward, separating Novaliches from Caloocan and splitting it into two distinct regions. Additionally, San Mateo and a portion of Montalban had several barrios captured. On June 24, 1976, however, Presidential Decree 940 came into effect, restoring Manila's status as the nation's capital while designating the entire metropolis of Manila as the seat of government.
