Puno is a city in southeast Peru that is situated on Lake Titicaca's shore. With a population of roughly 140,839, it serves as both the Puno Region's and the Puno Province's capital. The city was established in 1668 by viceroy Pedro Antonio Fernández de Castro as capital of the province of Paucarcolla with the name San Juan Bautista de Puno. San Carlos de Puno was the new name, honouring King Charles II of Spain. Several churches in Puno were constructed during the colonial era to serve the Spanish people and evangelise the locals.
