Point Fortin, the smallest borough in Trinidad and Tobago and formally the Republic Borough of Point Fortin, is situated in the historic county of Saint Patrick in southwest Trinidad, some 32 kilometres (20 miles) southwest of San Fernando. The town expanded into a significant oil-producing hub following the discovery of petroleum there in 1906. Between the 1940s and 1980s, the town expanded alongside the oil sector, reaching a pinnacle with its elevation to borough status in 1980. Point Fortin was severely impacted by the 1980s economic slump and the closure of its oil refinery following the end of the oil boom. The economy was helped by Atlantic LNG's construction of a liquefied natural gas plant in the late 1990s.
