In the northern region of Montenegro, Pljevlja is both a town and the administrative hub of Pljevlja Municipality. The village is located at a height of 770 metres (2,530 feet). Pljevlja served as a nexus for major trade routes, cultural currents, and routes linking the littoral to the interior of the Balkans during the Middle Ages. The city of Pljevlja was the fourth-largest urban settlement in Montenegro in 2011 with a population of 19,489 and a municipality of 30,786 people. In addition to the Montenegrin municipalities of Abljak, Bijelo Polje, and Mojkovac, the municipality also has borders with Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to the east and west, respectively. Its 1,346 km2 (520 sq mi) total size makes it the third-largest municipality in Montenegro.
