Pathein, formerly called Bassein, is the largest city and the capital of the Ayeyarwady Region, Myanmar (Burma). The city has a population of 237,089 and is situated on the bank of the Pathein River (Pathein), a western tributary of the Irrawaddy River, 190 kilometres (120 miles) west of Yangon.
