The administrative centre of the Nagapattinam District is located in the town of Nagapattinam in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. During the Chola era of mediaeval India, the town rose to prominence and became a key harbour for trade and eastward-bound naval operations. From 1799 to 1845, it served as the Tanjore district's capital for the British Madras Presidency. In Independent India, it remained a part of the Thanjavur district. It became the administrative centre of the recently established Nagapattinam District in 1991. 102,905 people called Nagapattinam home as of 2011. It is administered by a Special grade municipality and has an area of 17.92 km2 (6.92 sq mi).
