The second-largest city in terms of population and a significant seaport in North Korea is called Nampo, which is also spelled Namp'o. It is located 15 kilometres east of the Taedong River's mouth on the northern shore of the river. It was formerly known as Chinnamp'o, was a "Directly Governed City" ("Chikhalsi") at the provincial level from 1980 to 2004, and was given the designation of "Special City" in 2010. At the Taedong River's mouth, 50 kilometres southwest of Pyongyang, is Nampo. The city has had substantial recent reconstruction and a wide range of industry development since North Korea's independence.
