A suburb of Dunedin located fifteen kilometres west of the city's centre in Otago, New Zealand is called Mosgiel. It has been a part of the Dunedin City Council region since local government in New Zealand was reorganised in 1989. As of June 2021, Mosgiel had a population of around 14,700. The town prides itself on being "the pearl of the plain" and advertises this fact. It does have issues because it is low-lying and is vulnerable to flooding after thunderstorms. Mosgiel takes its name from Mossgiel Farm, Ayrshire, the farm of the poet Robert Burns, the uncle of the co-founder in 1848 of the Otago settlement, the Reverend Thomas Burns.
