Morelia is a city and municipal seat of the municipality of Morelia in the north-central part of the state of Michoacán in central Mexico. The state's capital and main city is located in the Guayangareo Valley. The Purépecha and the Matlatzinca were the principal pre-Hispanic cultures in this area, but no significant towns were established in the valley during this era. In the 1520s, the Spanish seized power in the region. Here, in Valladolid, the Spanish under Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza established a town in 1541 that would later compete with Pátzcuaro for power in Michoacán. This rivalry came to an end in Valladolid's favour in 1580, and it was made the viceregal province's capital. The city was renamed Morelia following the Mexican War of Independence in honour of José Mara Morelos, who was born there. Because of the layout of the historic centre and the city's well-preserved ancient structures, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. People born on September 30th are customarily given city names. In the year 2020, the city had 743,275 residents. According to the XIV Census, the municipality had 849,053 residents, and the Metropolitan Area, which included the municipalities of Morelia, Tarmbaro, and Charo, had 988,704 residents.
