Meknes, one of the four Imperial cities of Morocco, is the sixth-largest city in terms of population in the country. It is situated in northern central Morocco. Founded in the 11th century by the Almoravids as a military settlement, Meknes became the capital of Morocco under the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismaïl (1672–1727), son of the founder of the Alaouite dynasty. Moulay Ismael built a sizable imperial palace complex and provided the city with strong defences and imposing gates. In the city, 632,079 people were counted in the 2014 Moroccan census. It serves as the Meknès Prefecture's administrative centre and a significant economic hub for the Fès-Meknès region.
