Isiolo, the county seat of Isiolo County, is a town. It is located in the middle of Kenya, and lies 285 kilometres north of the capital Nairobi. The town grew around the local military camps, much of the population being descendants of former Somali soldiers who had fought in World War I as well as other Cushitic-speaking pastoral communities and the Ameru community. The town has an estimated 80,000 residents, the most of whom reside in the District's rural hinterlands. Recent years have seen an increase in the urban population, particularly from as far away as Moyale, Marsabit, and Mandera. The town of Isiolo is also growing in popularity as a result of its newfound reputation as a resort city that benefits from the well-liked Samburu and Shaba Game Reserves, which have replaced the renowned Maasai Mara as popular travel destinations. Isiolo is located along the expansive A2 Road, which connects to much further north Marsabit and Moyale.
