Hejin Coins

Hejin is a county-level city of Yuncheng City, in the southwest of Shanxi province, People's Republic of China, located on the east (left) bank of the Yellow River. It borders Jishan and Wanrong counties to the east and south, Linfen to the north, and Hancheng in Shaanxi across the Yellow River to the west. Its 360,000 residents were spread across an area of 593 km2 (229 sq mi) as of the year 2002. There are numerous aluminium reserves in the city and the surrounding area. Hejin was first known as Pishi County during the Qin Dynasty, then as Longmen County during the Northern Wei, and lastly as Hejin County during the Song Dynasty. Due to the necessity of crossing the Yellow River at the time, the city's name literally translates as "river ford." Hejin was promoted to the county-level city it is today in 1994.
