Burundi's capital, Gitega, was once known as Kitega. Gitega was the capital of the Kingdom of Burundi until it was abolished in 1966. It is situated in the middle of the nation, in the central plateau of Burundi, some 62 kilometres (39 miles) east of Bujumbura. Late in December 2018, Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza declared that he will fulfil a pledge he made in 2007 to restore Gitega to its old status as the country's political capital, with Bujumbura continuing to serve as its economic and commercial hub. On January 16, 2019, a vote in Burundi's Parliament made the shift official, with a three-year transition anticipated for all branches of the government.
