Gera is situated in the Central German Metropolitan Region, roughly 60 kilometres south of Leipzig, the main city in Saxony, 80 kilometres east of Erfurt, 120 kilometres west of Dresden, and 90 kilometres north of Hof, the largest city in Bavaria (Saale).
