The city of Ciudad Guayana is located in Venezuela's Bolvar State. It extends 40 kilometres along the Orinoco River's south bank, where the Caron River, the primary tributary, joins it. The city is divided in two by the Caroni, which runs south-north between the old town of San Félix in the east and the new town of Puerto Ordaz in the west. Although the two previous villages were combined to become the city in 1961, San Félix has a long history dating back to its founding in 1724. The locations of Cachamay Falls and Llovizna Falls are within the city limits. There are three bridges that cross the Caroni, and the city's second Orinoco crossing, the Orinoquia Bridge, was opened in 2006. Due to its significant iron, steel, aluminium, and hydroelectric industries, it is Venezuela's fastest-growing metropolis with a population of almost a million. Ciudad Guayana is one of Venezuela's five most important ports, since most goods produced in the industry-rich Bolívar state are shipped through it, as ocean-going vessels can sail to it from the Atlantic Ocean up the Orinoco river.
