From the late 12th or early 13th century until it was felled by a storm in 1856, Hartford, Connecticut's Wyllys Hyll was home to the extremely huge white oak tree known as the Charter Oak. Tradition has it that the tree's hollow was used to conceal Connecticut's Royal Charter of 1662 in order to prevent the English governor-general from seizing it. The Connecticut State Quarter honours the oak, which came to represent American independence. Connecticut was also featured on a commemorative half dollar and a postage stamp in 1935 in honour of the state's 400th birthday.
