Campeche Coins

One of the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico, officially known as the Free and Sovereign State of Campeche, is one of the 31 states that make up the country. It is a state in southeast Mexico and is surrounded by the states of Yucatán to the northeast, Tabasco to the southwest, and Quintana Roo to the east. To the southeast, Belize's Orange Walk district lies, and to the south, Guatemala's Petén department. The Gulf of Mexico borders its western coastline. In 1997, the city-state of Campeche was designated as a World Heritage Site. The city, which was established in 1540 as the Spanish started to conquer the Yucatán Peninsula, served as the foundation for the state. During the colonial era, the city was a prosperous and significant port; however, following Mexico's independence, it began to decline. Originally a part of the Yucatán province, Campeche broke away in the middle of the 19th century, primarily as a result of political conflict with the city of Mérida. The 1970s offshore petroleum discovery, which resulted in the coastal cities of Campeche and Ciudad del Carmen becoming significant economic hubs, is largely responsible for the state's recent economic resurgence. Important Mayan and colonial sites can be found in the state, but they are not as well-known or frequented as those in the Yucatán.
