When King Eadred, the grandson of King Alfred the Great, gave Thegn Aelfric land at "Stohes" in 948 AD, Bishopstoke was also mentioned. The settlement sits on the eastern bank of the River Itchen, about a mile east of Eastleigh's town centre. It is in the Fair Oak and Horton Heath parish and borders Fair Oak on the east. In 1932, the village was divided into a separate civil parish and eventually annexed by Eastleigh. It is a component of Southampton Urban Area.
