West Lothian, Scotland's Bathgate is a town next to the M8 freeway and 5 miles (8 km) west of Livingston. Armadale, Blackburn, Linlithgow, Livingston, West Calder, and Whitburn are nearby cities. Situated 2 miles (3 km) south of the ancient Neolithic burial site at Cairnpapple Hill, Bathgate and the surrounding area show signs of habitation since about 3500 BC and the world's oldest known reptile fossil has been found in the town. Bathgate was a tiny community with a church at Kirkton and a castle south of the modern town centre by the 12th century. Despite the 17th century establishment of nearby mines, the town remained small until the start of the industrial revolution. Bathgate gained notoriety as an industrial and mining hub during the Victorian era, primarily thanks to its connections to the coal and shale oil sectors. The town developed manufacturing industries, primarily in the construction of vehicles and then electronics, before these facilities closed in the late 20th century. By the early 20th century, much of the mining and heavy industry near the town had stopped. Bathgate is a regional commuter town located inside the Scottish Central Belt and is currently the second-largest town in West Lothian, behind Livingston.
