Abingdon-on-Thames, also referred to simply as Abingdon, is a historic market town and civil parish on the River Thames in the ceremonial county of Oxfordshire, England. Abingdon, formerly the county town of Berkshire, has been governed by the Vale of White Horse district of Oxfordshire since 1974. The region was inhabited from the early to middle Iron Age, and beneath the town centre are the ruins of a late Iron Age and Roman defensive enclosure. Around 676, Abingdon Abbey was established, giving the growing town its name. Abingdon was a major agricultural hub during the 13th and 14th centuries, with a thriving wool industry that included weaving and apparel production. From Edward I to George II, different kings gave permission for markets and fairs to be held.
