Teyateyaneng is a town in the Lesotho province of Berea. Teyateyaneng, commonly abbreviated as T.Y., gets its name from two twin rivers that flow in opposite directions. Both rivers flow into the Mohokare or Caledon River, which serves as South Africa's western border. Both of their titles suggest that this is a "place of swift sands" because of the large amounts of sand they contain, which causes feet to drop quickly as one traverses them. Teyateyaneng's name therefore comes from the southern Teja-tejana River, but the name later changed to Teyateyaneng, perhaps due to British influences as the country became a Protectorate in the late 1800s.
