Santa Maria Atzompa Coins

A hamlet and municipality called Santa Mara Atzompa may be found in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, five kilometres away from the Oaxaca state capital. It is a piece of the Valles Centrales region's Centro District. The settlement was established as a satellite of the historic Zapotec city of Monte Albán between the seventh and ninth centuries. Since the town's inception, pottery production has been a significant source of income, and it is particularly well-known for its green-glazed ceramics. The majority of this pottery is now sold locally, as opposed to earlier times when it was exported to the United States and shipped throughout Mexico. Beginning in 2009, there has been excavation at the Atzompa archeological site, leading to the discovery of a 45-meter Mesoamerican ball court, which has been determined to have been on the principal one for Monte Alban. The village is now rustic, with wood-fired pottery kiln smoke permeating the air. The town has struggled with poverty, but innovations like the use of lead-free glazing and a collective crafts market have been put in place to boost the possibilities for the craft.
