One of Lower Saxony's seven Oberzentren is Salzgitter, along with Wolfsburg and Braunschweig. Its area, 223.92 square kilometres (86.46 sq mi), and population of 101,079 make it the largest in Lower Saxony and one of the largest in Germany. Originally a collection of various small towns and villages, Salzgitter is now made up of 31 boroughs, which are relatively minor conurbations separated by large expanses of open land. The major business district is in the borough of Salzgitter-Bad, and the main shopping street is in the borough of Lebenstedt. A distributary connects the city to the Mittellandkanal and the Elbe Lateral Canal. The closest big cities are Braunschweig, which is 23 kilometres away, and Hanover, which is 51 kilometres away. Since its founding in 1942, when it was still known as Watenstedt-Salzgitter, the City of Salzgitter has housed more over 100,000 people. Salzgitter, along with Wolfsburg, Leverkusen, and Eisenhüttenstadt, is one of the few German cities established in the 20th century.
