Between September 25 and October 8, 1915, on the Western Front in France, the Battle of Loos took place. The New Army battalions engaged in battle in large numbers for the first time during the largest British assault of 1915. In order to reinstate a war of mobility, the French and British attempted to breach the German defences in Artois and Champagne. The Germans were able to mostly contain the Franco-British attacks, with the exception of some localised ground losses, in spite of improved tactics, more ammunition, and better equipment. The British artillery barrage was too brief to remove the barbed wire or machine gun positions, and the gas attack failed to subdue the defenders. British offensive preparation and doctrine fell short of German tactical defensive expertise, which led to a British defeat.
