Dodoma, officially Dodoma City, is the national capital of Tanzania and the capital of the Dodoma Region, with a population of 410,956. For social and economic reasons as well as to centralise the capital within the nation, the Tanzanian government declared in 1974 that the capital would be moved to Dodoma. In 1996, it attained the status of capital. A large portion of the original design took a very long time to materialise. Most institutional headquarters were only shifted to the new capital in 2018–2019 due to a new drive. Embasies have so far resisted transferring their offices to Dodoma. As a result, Dar es Salaam remains the commercial capital of Tanzania and still retains the state house Ikulu, and a large number of government functions.
