Dharan, a sub-metropolitan city in Nepal's Province No. 1's Sunsari District, was created as the country's fourth municipality in 1958. After Biratnagar and Itahari, it is the third most populous city in Eastern Nepal. The mediaeval Limbuwan kingdom's previous capital, Vijayapur, which was afterwards occupied by the Sen rulers of Makwanpur, was once located in Dharan. According to the Nepal census of 2021, Dharan has an estimated population of 173,096 people living in 34,834 households. It is one of the cities that make up the Greater Birat Development Area, which is primarily located on the Koshi Highway in Eastern Nepal and includes the cities of Biratnagar, Itahari, Gothgau, Biratchowk, and Dharan. The Greater Birat Development Area is estimated to have an overall urban population of 804,300 people living in 159,332 households. It is the biggest city in the region and the top city by area. Its area is 192.32 square kilometres, and the next two largest cities are Biratnagar and Itahari.
