The second-oldest city in Venezuela and the seat of the Falcón State is Coro, once known as Neu-Augsburg. On July 26, 1527, Juan de Ampes founded it as Santa Ana de Coro. It is located a few kilometres from its port in the Caribbean Sea at a point equidistant between the Ensenada de La Vela and Golfete de Coro. It is situated at the southern tip of the Paraguaná Peninsula in a coastal plain, flanked by the Médanos de Coro National Park to the north and the Sierra de Coro to the south.
