Bishopbriggs is a town in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland; its Scottish Gaelic name is Drochaid an Easbaig. It is located on the northern outskirts of Greater Glasgow, around four miles (six kilometres) from the city centre. The region was formerly a part of the mediaeval parish of Cadder in Lanarkshire; King William the Lion had initially given the Bishop of Glasgow, Jocelin, the lands in question in 1180. Later, it became a part of the county of Lanarkshire, and from 1964 to 1975, it was a separate burgh. Today, Bishopbriggs is practically a commuting town and suburb of Glasgow due to its close geographic proximity. Although the town's current Gaelic name, Drochaid an Easbaig, is a direct translation of Bishopbriggs, the previous Gaelic name, Coille Dobhair, echoes the name of the former parish of Cadder. Following research conducted by the Centre for Economic and Business Research in 2015 and 2016, it was named as the second-most desired postcode in Scotland to reside in.
