Tanzania's western region has the city of Sumbawanga. It has the postcode 55100 and serves as both the municipal seat of Sumbawanga Urban District and the capital of Rukwa Region. The 2002 census showed that there were roughly 150,000 people living in the district. Kifipa, the most widely spoken language in Tanzania, is also widely spoken at Sumbawanga, which is in the area of the Wafipa Fipa tribe. The town's name, which means "throw away your witchcraft," is literally translated as such. This is thought to be a warning from local spiritual "healers" to anyone bringing in superstitions and practises relating to spiritual healers from other areas. However, there are still some healers who practise both in town and in the nearby smaller villages on the plateau. In addition to the smaller Dr. Atiman Hospital, which is managed and operated by the Catholic Diocese of Sumbawanga, the town is home to Rukwa General Hospital, the largest hospital in the area and a government-funded facility.
