With a population of 15.4 million in the city proper as of 2015, Lagos is the largest city in Nigeria and the second most populous city in Africa. The Lagos area is growing by about 3000 people per day, or about 1.1 million annually, so the true population of the greater Lagos area in 2022 will be close to 28 million. Nigeria's national capital was Lagos until the government decided to relocate it to Abuja in the country's centre in December 1991. As of 2018, there were around 23.5 million people living in the Lagos metropolitan region, making it the largest metropolitan area in Africa. Lagos, the economic centre of Lagos State and all of Nigeria, is a significant financial hub for Africa. The city, which has a big impact on business, entertainment, technology, education, politics, tourism, art, and fashion, has been called the cultural, financial, and entertainment centre of Africa. Lagos is also one of the 10 cities and urban areas with the fastest rate of growth worldwide. The megacity is home to one of the biggest and busiest seaports on the continent and has the fourth-highest GDP in Africa. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the Lagos metropolitan area is a significant centre for education and culture.
