Rajahmundry, often referred to as Rajamahendravaram, is the administrative centre of the East Godavari district and a city in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It ranks as the state's eighth most populous city. In the Madras Presidency during British administration, the District of Rajahmundry was established in 1823. It was divided into the Krishna and Godavari districts in 1859 after a reorganisation. Godavari district, which was subsequently divided into East Godavari and West Godavari districts in 1925, had its headquarters in Rajahmundry. When the Godavari district was divided, Kakinada became the East Godavari headquarters while Eluru became the West Godavari headquarters. It is managed by the East Godavari district's Rajahmundry revenue division. The city is known for its floriculture, history, culture, agriculture, economy, tourism, and its heritage. The "Cultural Capital of Andhra Pradesh" is what it is called.
