Wollongong, sometimes known as "The Gong," is a city in the Australian state of New South Wales' Illawarra division. The word woolyungah, which meant five islands in the Aboriginal language at the time of colonisation, is assumed to have been the source of the name. 85 kilometres south of the centre of Sydney, Wollongong is located on the confined coastal strip between the Pacific Ocean and the Illawarra Escarpment. Wollongong had an estimated urban population of 302,739 at June 2018, making it the third-largest city in New South Wales after Sydney and Newcastle and the tenth-largest city in Australia by population. Gordon Bradbery AM is the city's current Lord Mayor; he was chosen in 2021.
