Brazil's state of Esprito Santo has as its capital Vitória, formerly known as Victória until the 1940s. It is situated on a tiny island in a harbour where several rivers flow into the sea. In 1551, it was founded. The Greater Vitória metropolitan region, the 14th largest in Brazil, with a population of more than 1,857,616 (2013), while the city proper, which is 93 square kilometres in size, has a population of 365,855 (2020).
