Viseu is a city and municipality in the Centro Region of Portugal. It is the administrative seat of the Viseu D'o Lafes intermunicipal community, which has 267,633 residents, and the capital of the district of the same name. The land of Viseu was inhabited by a number of cultures, including the Romans, Suebs, Visigoths, and Moors. It was first settled during the time of the early Iberian Castro culture. It is believed that Viriathus, the Lusitanians' rebel commander, briefly resided in the area during the Roman colonisation of Iberia. The city was frequently used as the residence of Visigothic nobility during the Middle Ages, and Afonso Henriques, the country's first king, is thought to have been born there or nearby.
