Gokanna/Gokarna, popularly known as Trincomalee, is a significant resort port city in Sri Lanka's Eastern Province and serves as the district's administrative centre. Located on the east coast of the island overlooking the Trincomalee Harbour, 237 kilometres (147 mi) north-east of Colombo, 182 kilometres (113 mi) south-east of Jaffna and 111 kilometres (69 mi) miles north of Batticaloa, Trincomalee has been one of the main centres of Sri Lankan Tamil language speaking culture on the island for over two millennia. The city, which has a population of 99,135, is situated on the same-named peninsula, which separates its inner and outer harbours. Trincomalians are people from Trincomalee, and Trincomalee Urban Council is the local government. The well-known Koneswaram temple is located in Trincomalee City, where it first took shape and received its traditional Tamil name Thirukonamalai. Other historical landmarks in the town include the Bhadrakali Amman Temple, Trincomalee, the Trincomalee Hindu Cultural Hall, and the Trincomalee Hindu College, which was founded in 1897. The Trincomalee railway station and an antiquated ferry service to Jaffna and the south side of the Muttur harbour are both located in Trincomalee.
