Trabzon, formerly known as Trebizond in English, is the provincial capital of Trabzon Province and is located on the Black Sea coast of northeastern Turkey. A crossroads of religions, languages, and cultures for millennia, Trabzon, which is situated along the old Silk Road, served as a trading route to Persia in the southeast and the Caucasus in the northeast. During the Middle Ages, Venetian and Genoese traders travelled to Trabzon and bought and sold silk, linen, and woollen cloth. Both republics had merchant settlements in the city, including Leonkastron and the former "Venetian fortress," which served a similar function to Trabzon as Galata did to Constantinople. In its lengthy history, Trabzon served as the foundation for numerous states, and from 1204 until 1461 it served as the capital of the Trebizond Empire. Due to the significance of its port, Trabzon once more served as a hub for trade with Persia and the Caucasus throughout the early modern era.
