North of Mexico City, among the 125 municipalities that make up the state of Mexico, lies Tlalnepantla de Baz. The city of Tlalnepantla serves as both the municipality's administrative centre and major city. Tlalnepantla, which refers to the middle land, is derived from the Náhuatl terms tlalli (land) and nepantla (middle). The city was known in prior times as Tlalnepantla de Galeana and Tlalnepantla de Comonfort, to honor Hermenegildo Galeana and Ignacio Comonfort, respectively. The last name of Gustavo Baz Prada, a significant politician and member of Emiliano Zapata's army during the Mexican Revolution, is where the modern addition of Baz originates. Baz Prada became the state's governor and the head of Mexico's national autonomous university following the revolution (UNAM). It is situated in the Valley of Mexico, northeast of Mexico City proper, in the state of Mexico. It makes of the thick Region XII of Mexico State along with Atizapán.
