The city and municipality of Tapachula de Córdova y Ordóez, also known as Tapachula, is situated in the extreme southeast of the Mexican state of Chiapas, close to the Guatemalan border and the Pacific Ocean. As the regional centre of the agriculturally prosperous Soconusco region and a port for trade between Mexico and Central America, it is one of the most economically significant cities in Chiapas. The area was originally inhabited by the Mam as a region under the control of the Mam state of Xelaju but was first established as a city by the Aztecs in the 13th century. Since the introduction of coffee plantations in the late 19th century, its economic significance has largely increased. This agricultural output sparked a history of migration into the region that is still going strong today, leaving the city with a sizable Mayan and Nahua indigenous population in addition to a strong Asian and German cultural presence.
