Egypt's Tanta city has 658,798 residents, making it the fifth most populous city in the nation as of 2018. Tanta is situated 94 kilometres (58 miles) north of Cairo and 130 kilometres (81 miles) southeast of Alexandria. It is a hub for the cotton-ginning industry and the governorate's capital. Tanta is crossed by one of the main railway lines. Annual celebrations honouring Ahmad al-Badawi, a prominent Sufi saint from the 13th century who founded the Badawiyya Tariqa in Egypt and is buried in Ahmad Al-Badawi Mosque, Tanta's major mosque, are held there for a week starting on October 11. Tanta's sweet shops and roasted chickpeas are well-known.
